Character Description
Psychological Profile

Starfleet Medical's psychological examination suggests Phoenix is an extremely intuitive individual who prefers to rely on his senses rather than emotion. He engages concrete thoughts logically, and is extremely decision oriented.

Personality Profile

Michael Phoenix, 2397
Personnel File Image
Phoenix is young at heart though his face bears the burden of years of experience. Always ready for a jest, he will be about the most easy-going person you will ever meet. He is typically conservative in social skills and does not often initiate conversation with people he does not know. Although it is quite easy to get to know him, he generally does not take the initiative in conversation. His somewhat shy composure has limited his charisma, but his dry humor and quick wit more than make up for the lack of aggressive personality. Stressful situations switch his mental capacity towards the task at hand during which he becomes cold and efficient.

Personal History

Five years before applying to Starfleet Academy, Phoenix worked in civilian ship technologies. He excelled in design drafting and hull composition research as well as his primary skill in engine design. Many new designs of shuttlecraft and maintenance pods have been the benefactor of his ingenuity while working on with the research and development teams. After graduation, he earned a field promotion to Lieutenant J.G. and was transferred to the USS Resolution under command of Captain Jayne Fury. In a strategic move, he decided to return to Starfleet Academy after his tour of duty on the Resolution. There, he took a teaching position as he continued his research on engine design in Starfleet. At the academy, he became a personal mentor and friend to Doran Gregor, a bright young engineering student.

Completing his work on impulse propulsion improvements and warp field geometries, Phoenix looked to Starfleet for an open engineering position aboard a ship. The first position listed was the one he took: senior engineer on the USS Erinys under command of Captain Ari Tarryn. The Erinys assignment changed Phoenix's perspective on life forever.

While serving on the Erinys, Phoenix became good friends with the XO, K`ylana Vilqa and the chief security officer, Scott Sutton. An incredibly stressful situation arose when a computer glitch and a holodeck program went wild. After many desperate efforts to maintenance the computer problem, the holographic database began emulating Borg drones from a previously recorded training program. Unexpectedly, holographic Borg had the artificial impetus to proceed with their assimilation routines and to take over the Erinys. Realizing the surreal consequences, Phoenix made the grim recommendation of initializing an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) through the Erinys computer core. Despite this recommendation, Captain Tarryn refused to implement the strategy by declaring it premature, thus allowing the holographic Borg to take further areas of the ship including a cargo bay that had been previously constructed as a holographic arboretum. Miraculously, the holographic intruders began to degrade as there was a lack of available power to sustain their efforts. While the situation was self-limiting, it was for nothing as the Erinys was damaged beyond repair and finally scuttled and destroyed. Although hind sight showed what should have been done, Phoenix is convinced that if an EMP were used, the computer core would simply have been replaced and the Erinys would still be in existence along with many of the crew who died because of a computer error.

With the ill-fated Erinys destroyed, Phoenix transferred back to Starfleet Academy where he worked with his protégé, Doran Gregor, in the design and construction of various ships in Starfleet.

It wasn't until 2396 when Phoenix began work on an Intrepid class project at Utopia Planitia that he felt the call back into space. It was a tough decision, but one with unique qualities. As construction of the USS Tremaine (as it was so christened) completed, he put in a request for transfer as her chief engineer... leaving Gregor to fill his shoes as the apprentice was ready.

As most Starfleet engineers do beyond the maiden voyage of a new starship, Mike's major tasks were to track down and smooth out any bugs that popped up with the USS Tremaine's systems. His experience as chief engineer of prior starships had helped him eliminate as many as possible while the ship was constructed--however many issues remain latent until the ship is exposed to the rigors of space, particularly space combat. The Tremaine performed admirably during her first conflict at Nordin III, coming to the rescue of colonists under attack by pirates.

Just as Phoenix, as second officer of the USS Tremaine, was beginning a first contact mission on planet Happi, he was ordered by Starfleet to transition and succeed the role of his colleague and friend Scott Sutton as Executive Officer of the USS Orion.
