Character Description
Psychological Profile:

Dr. Braden is an eccentric, yet brilliant young doctor going through life almost aimlessly but with due dilligence. He prefers a sarcastic, yet logical approach to diagnosis which tends to be characterized with an abrasive bedside manner. He balks at things that does not make sense, especially human interaction and stupidity. Although well aware of his lacking social graces, he is very passionate about medicine-- especially solving the unsolvable.

Ryan has been diagnosed by a Starfleet psychiatric evaluation as narcissistic personality disorder with obsessive traits. It is defined as a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Specified characteristics are as follows: Braden has a grandiose sense of self importance, for example, he exaggerates achievements and talents while expecting to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements. He is also pre-occupied with unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal love. He believes that he is special and unique, and can only be understood by or associate with other special and high status people. He requires excessive admiration and he entertains a sense of entitlement while taking advantage of others to achieve his own ends. There is an overall lack of empathy, and he is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him. Finally, he shows arrogance through haughty behaviors or attitudes.

Personal History:

Ryan Braden, 2392
Personnel File Image
Ryan Braden began his Starfleet career with a relatively short tour of duty on the USS Hellebarde before transferring to the USS Vimy Ridge under Captain K'ylana Vilqa. Once there, he excelled as a physician and ship's surgeon, however butted heads with nearly anyone he came across... namely his Chief Medical Officer, Caitlin Blake (ne Brody) and his peer, Seevalis. While Ryan demonstrated exceptional skills in diagnostic medicine (necessary on the mission profile of the Galaxy class starship), he obtained multiple reprimands on his permanent record for, on multiple occasions, sleeping on duty and disrespecting senior officers. In one instance, Braden was irritated for being interrupted for a staff meeting while treating a patient and ended up bring the patient with him to the meeting.

On stardate 930304, Braden switched Ricardo 'Rico' Montoya's medication with a simple saline placebo. Rico needed these medications to supress pheromone production due to a combination of his half-Deltan heritage and an exposure to a chemical that caused him to overproduce them. Braden also withdrew a sample of Rico's endocrine tissue to further study this situation in hopes of presenting Rico with a cure. Unbeknownst to Rico and the Vimy Ridge crew, Ryan also had ulterior motives for the tissue--the goal being to produce a refined pheromone solution that he could wear as a mood-altering cologne for any female shipmates he encountered. The cologne was only mildly successful as the effects wore off rapidly since there was not enough pheromone per dose held in solution to produce a long-lasting effect. Ryan was planning to observe Rico while he was on the placebo to gauge the female response to the pheromones as a positive control for his experiment. However, a large controversy stirred between himself and Caitlin Blake regarding their antithetic personalities resulting in the hijacking of her coffee pot which she regarded the pot as a friendly gesture to those in sickbay. The turmoil forced Braden to confront his pessimism and overcome it with the help of Cait.

Rico's pheromone experiment spiraled out of control because Ryan had not counted on multiple Deltans being assigned to the Vimy Ridge at the same time. Niamh Mika and Ivri, Deltans on board, were adversely affected by the pheromone overproduction and were isolated in sickbay--both sustaining minor injuries during the incident. On stardate 930407, Caitlin discovered Braden was the one who last treated Rico at his checkup and discovered the change to his medications. Braden was subsequently arrested by Serenity Valence. Serenity was someone who Braden admired and actually held a fond attraction to her. Much to his chagrin, he let himself down disappointing Serenity by being guilty despite her belief in his innocence. While he was reprimanded and on a tight leash, he persisted as a medical officer on board the Vimy Ridge following the incident and going on to produce the cure for Montoya's condition.

It wasn't until stardate 930616 that Ryan was arrested again, not knowing that Starfleet Medical had launched their own investigation into his conduct unbecoming of a doctor and Starfleet officer. He was transported back to Earth for the disciplinary hearing. All criminal charges were dropped, however Braden's medical license was revoked at the conclusion of the hearing on stardate 930802. From there, Ryan took haitus from Starfleet without saying goodbye to any of his former crewmates. Without a medical license, the only thing he could turn to was teaching. He took an internship position on a teaching hospital on Adigeon Prime. The Adigeons had been known for their illegal medical practices (e.g. illegal genetic enhancement, controversial cosmetic procedures, treatment of fugitives, etc...) and had been trying to turn over a new leaf to gain respect by Starfleet. Therefore, they were the only ones desperate enough to take Braden despite his colorful record--a mixture of commendations and reprimands.

Stardate 970103 marked a new beginning for Braden who dealt with depression and resentment throughout his adult life. His medical license was re-instated and he readily jumped back into Starfleet. While he had overcome his depression and his long latent moral fiber proliferated, he still has a tremendous amount of maturing to accomplish.

The USS Tempest was sent to planet Sirius XII from stardate 970408 through 970708 to arbitrate a peace conference between the Nississi and Musharak inhabitants. Ryan suffered several bouts of fatigue and stress headaches from dealing with the strong telepathic species, furthering his disdain for empaths. However, side effects of the stress endured by telepathic crewmembers on the Tempest enabled Braden to catch a glimpse into the life of Kestra Gelvari, bringing them closer together as friends after Gelvari was mentally attacked on the planet surface. After the mental trauma, Kestra's healing phase causes her mind to become telepathically linked to Ryan. Being thrust onto the telepathic playing field causes Ryan much angst as he is prejudiced against telepaths and their abilities. This unintended side effect plays a major role in allowing him to open thoughts which were so closed prior to the incident.

After the Tempest secured the end of its official role as the Federation delegate to Sirius XII, Ryan was sent to Risa to participate in a biomedical conference on telepathy and its surrounding research. Upon returning to the Tempest, Ryan discovers it is in orbit of an uncharted planet near the Nississian and Musharak sector. The planet exhibited telepathic influence on the crew which Braden quickly discovered as he attempted to rejoin the crew to overthrow an insane Captain Marcus Saladin.

The aftermath forced Ryan to face a number of obstacles representing his discomfort with telepathic individuals. Due to the extreme telepathic stress placed upon the crew, Ryan began to see telepathy in a different light--further strengthening his friendship with telepathic members on board.

Their next mission placed Ryan in charge of directing the evacuation of patients from Caldik Prime which eventually lead to discovery of political intrigue and murder regarding the priority of which population would be evacuated first... and which ones risked being left behind as their sun went supernova.

After the Caldik mission, Ryan was ordered by Starfleet Medical to be reassigned to a hospital station in orbit of the Klingon homeworld Qo'nos where he stood in for the prior xenobiology residency director until a replacement could be found. Three months turned into six, which turned into nine... then a full year of being embedded with the Klingon medical system, a new director is installed with Ryan's orders calling him back home to Earth.
